Hiding Your Visit

Below are instructions for minimising the chances of someone finding out that you’ve visited this website.

This advice may not completely hide your visit. The safest way to find information on the internet is to use the facilities at your local library, an internet café, a friend's house or at work.

Clearing your internet browsing history

Internet Explorer

  1. In the 'Tools' menu in the upper-right corner of the browser window, select 'Internet options'.
  2. On the ‘General’ tab, under 'Browsing history', tick 'Delete browsing history on exit' and then 'Delete'.
  3. A box will pop up giving you a list of options for you to delete. You can choose extra things to delete to hide your website activity or just click ‘Delete’ and then ‘OK’.

Chrome

  1. Select the ‘Customize and control’ icon on the right-hand side of the address bar, represented as three thick lines.
  2. Select ‘Settings’ from the dropdown list.
  3. Click on ‘Advanced settings’ at the bottom of the new window that opens up.
  4. Under the ‘Privacy’ heading, click on the ‘Clear browsing data...’ button and then select all the check boxes you wish to clear.
  5. Click the ‘Clear browsing data’ button to clear your selections.

Firefox

  1. Select ‘Tools’ from the top menu.
  2. Choose ‘Clear recent history...’ from the dropdown list.
  3. Make sure you click ‘Browsing and download history’ and check what else you would like to clear.

Safari

  1. Click the ‘Settings’ button in the upper-right corner of the browser window.
  2. Select ‘Reset Safari…’ from the dropdown list.
  3. Clear, delete or reset much of the information that Safari automatically stores.
  4. Click your cursor in the box only next to the items in the menu you want to delete, clear or reset.
  5. Click ‘Reset’ when you’re finished.

Opera

  1. Select ‘Tools’ from the top menu.
  2. Select ‘Delete private data…’ from the dropdown list.
  3. Make sure that the four ‘Clear History’ entries are selected.
  4. Click ‘Delete’.

Using private browsing

Private browsing allows you to browse the internet without saving information about the sites and pages you have visited. This includes browsing history, temporary internet files (cache) and cookies.

Choose the instructions for your browser to set up private browsing in a new private window:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 8: Click ‘Tools’ or ‘Safety’ and then click ‘InPrivate Browsing’.
  • Google Chrome: Click the wrench icon and then click ‘New Incognito Window’.
  • Firefox 3.5 and newer: Click ‘Tools’, and then click ‘Start Private Browsing’ and ‘OK’.
  • Safari 2.0 and newer: Click the wheel icon, and then click ‘Private Browsing’ and ‘OK’.
  • Opera: Click Opera settings button and then click new private window. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+N.
